First of all, you need low sulfer diesel fuel to meet emissions claims. The USA still doesn't have it and the all-mighty Bush Administration keeps postponing the introduction date indefinitely for fear of pricing concerns.
Second, the MB diesel uses filters and scrubbers to meet the air resources board (ARB). These are consumables for service which you will pay for in both new installation and probably an environmental disposal fee to dispose of. You will also need Urea in an injectable canister to remove combustion byproducts. "Anyone need to pee? I got to fill up the Urea tank" I wonder how much mileage they get out of the Urea reservoir?
Until we get the low sulfer diesel fuel, they won't sell.

AFAIK, when low sulphur fuel is finally introduced in the US, it should be no problem for BMW to sell their current diesel cars in the US. Maybe they're waiting for the fuel to actually become available before they issue a press release.

If diesel is more efficient I wonder when we'll start to see diesel electric hybrids . Aren't train engines already diesel electric?.
