 Suggested stopovers in northern/eastern Germany?

Hello,

After picking up our car in Munich, we plan to head north to visit friends in Denmark. I don't wan't spend more than 2-4 hours on the road each day, so we'll be spending the night in several different places along the way. Currently my rough itinerary is as follows:

Day 1: Munich to Rothenburg area
Day 2: Rothenburg to Rhine River Valley
Day 3: Rhine River Valley to Colonge
Day 4: Cologne to ???
Day 5: ??? to Denmark

Anyone have suggestions for the Day 4 stopover?

Also, if you have recommendations for stopovers on our return to Munich, I'd appreciate hearing about them. We'll probably stick to eastern Germany for our return trip and will skip Berlin (stayed there on a previous vacation).

thanks,
Greg

Where in Denmark are you headed? If your friends are in Copenhagen, my quick suggestion would be to make a loop entering Jutland and exiting Zealand, e.g.:
  • Cologne
  • Ribe (DK)
  • Copenhagen
  • Lübeck (D)
  • Goslar
  • ...

Dude!! That is nutz man!! Are you going on a vacation or... Blitzkreig??!! Stop by and smell the roses sometimes will ya??!!

Also, why would you need to have a "return" trip?? Drop the car off at your destination and fly out of there.... I don't see any point of going back to Munich. Dude!! That is just WAY too much driving and not much seeing. Unless driving is your obejective in which case ... ignore what I said.

Hope you have a STRONG marriage w/ that much planned drivng

cheers,

beewang

I think the itinerary is doable. 2-3 hours driving between the destinations is a good plan.

I agree with Bee though, no need to return to Munich.

A sidetrip to Luxembourg would be good.

Assuming you want to do all this (see the comments above), here are a few options:

North - Hamburg is interesting, with harbor, lakes, museums, shopping, grand hotels, red-light district, good restaurants, etc., but a business rather than tourist atmosphere.

East: Berlin, of course. Dresden is very interesting, although most of the tourists are German. Nice transport museum right in the center. Dessau has the Bauhaus and a small museum. If you like Bauhaus buidings, have a meal at the Kornhaus. Leipzig has Auerbach's Keller and a historic town center. You can even go back throgh Prague. if you have the time.

On the way back to Munich, go through Nuremburg or Regensburgh.

Have fun

First you tell me I can't have the grey leather, and now you want to control my itinerary. I think this moderator gig has gone to your head

Blame Lufthansa for the return trip to Munich. We have to come home on a specific day, and there are no seats available in the 2-for-1 fare class on any other flights out of Germany. I'm going to check other airlines.

Thanks to everyone else who replied in this thread. I'll take your advice into consideration as a plan the rest of my itinerary.

Greg
