 Theory on ED

I'm wondering if the following scenario is possible.

Given this vehicle:

BMW 545i

Retail Price USA Port of Entry: $62,430
Wholesale Price ED Munich + $1000 dealer profit: $53,805

Is it possible to purchase the vehicle through ED and drive it in the states until the retail value comes down to my initial purchase price and then sell the vehicle at my cost. You could essentially drive the vehicle for free, maybe six months.

Is this nonsense or what?

Better factor in the sales tax and license in your thinking. Sales tax depends on which state you live in. Also your markup may be a bit low.

The price I quoted includes a 3.5% excise tax.

I am doing essentially what you are talking about - my 545i is currently offered for sale at $49,000 about 16 months after ED. I got a 645Cic a few months ago.
I am down about $5,000 from the purchase price plus what I have paid in taxes and interest. Not bad.

I could be wrong, but I get the sense our kind moderator beewang has managed to keep himself in new BMWs based on just such a scenario. Living in a sales-tax-free state helps.

Sales tax is the killer here. Another thing is that you need to have a dealer who is willing to trade your car in at the price you are talking about. Of course if you can go and do a private sale things are great. Another option to consider is a 12 or 24 month lease if you are in a high sales tax state. The problem there is that you are paying $625+ on acquisition costs etc.
