This post is actually a response from my last posting "ED with pregnant wife." I want to upgrade to business or 1st class on United but don't have the miles nor the $$$. Ebay has a few sellers for either global or systemwide upgrades on United (<$1000). How trustworthy are these? Has anyone ever purchased an upgrade like these from a third party?

I have n o personal experience in this department but you can try the frequent flyer message board called flyertalk.com. The have a United Milage Plus specific board as well as coupon and barter boards. Check those out as well as the wealth of info and resources for travel in genneral
