BMW pickup & taxes? military sales?

Does anyone know exactly how long it takes via shippin E.H Harms? Can I pick it up at the port there in NJ?

I am govt. worker who was working for DOD in Germany before purchasing my 05 325Ci and registering it overseas with NATO car tags and putting about 1000 miles on it before shipping. Will this be enough to prevent having to pay taxes on it as a new vehicle?

Hey,

People here in the U.S. (Like a german diplomat) need to have the car registered for 1/2 year then they don''t have to pay taxes when they come back to Germany to register.

But here in the U.S. I'm not sure

Although each state is different in their treatment of cars and sales taxes due, I believe that you will have no issue with this. You definately registered the car already and when you arrive back here will simply be changing to your local state registration. No tax due. I wouldn't stake my life on it, but I'd bet a hand or something

This is NOT a Euro Delivery related question and I doubt you will be able to find any reliable answers here...... Sorry to say...

I would call Harms to find how long it would take as they know the current routine, but yes, you could drop off the car in Bremerhaven and then pick it up in New Jersey. Shipping port to port that way is probably your cheapest option though perhaps a really clever forwarder could do better.

I can offer a little insight here as I have recently brought a car back from Europe...but they were purchased in the US before I left. As long as you have a title you should be OK and it may be just a matter of regerstering the car in the state you live and pay the applicablle fees.

When I moved back to the states, all I needed to regester my car was the DoD form showing the car had been previously registered overseas, and my title. Usings those forms all I paid was the fees for registration. HOWEVER...when reading up on the issue of bringing back a new car (we didn't end up doing it) Illinois said any car not purchased without sales tax being paid, would be subject to the value of the car WHEN NEW and I would need to present a bill of sale.

That said, every state is different, but if you walk into the DMV with a title and your proof of previous registration you may not end up paying any taxes.
