I'm trying to budget my trip for July ED, and want to come up with an upper bound on airfare. Currently looks like about $1,100 total for the two of us through Lufthansa w/ the free ticket. The path of least resistance is to book the fare through Lufthansa and take the free ticket, but if I can significantly reduce the airfare that would be good.
What are some strategies to reduce that number? Wait till the last minute and book online through Travelocity, etc.? Peace of mind that the airfare is taken care of is worth something too. Perhaps BMW will up the ante on travel incentives once the end of March free tickets promotion is past.
Thoughts?

I would suggest continuing to shop around online for the best published fare until you are ready to buy your ticket or find a really good deal. Then you can call Lufthansa and try to get them to find the same fare and ticket it for you using the benefit of the ED promotion.

July is high season for travel from US to Europe. The airfare prices in the summer for typical non-refundable, restricted fares are typically $1000 to $1200 per person with the occasional fare "sale" in the mid to high $800s. I would not expect anything different this summer... if you can get two people to Europe in July for $1100, you're doing pretty well. If you're concerned about fare changes and such, read the fine print regarding the fare class and have the airline agents explain them to you. Usually, they may charge a change fee of up to $100 unless you're moving up in fare class (even though you may be paying less).

Thoughts? | You won't get any cheaper than that for summer. Keep trying www.orbitz.com but I doubt you'll get a better deal. If you find a better deal it will be too close to your trip and can mess up your plans. Besides with Lufthansa you'll have flexibility as far as flying in and out of different cities which can also increase the cost of the fare.

Try traveling to Berlin and then taking the train to Munich (about 2 hours). Tickets to berlin or frankfurt are usually cheaper.

Lufthansa has a direct flight Houston to Frankfurt, plus I need to stop and see my buddy in the army while I'm there. Just a short train ride to Munich, and everything works out fine.
