 Break-in period

Is the current break-in period 800 miles & below 4k rpm? Will this change with the new engines? Have you ever thought why BMW just doesn't break it in for us. I wouldn't mind if the put 800 miles on my car, just as long as I could be doing 155 out of the ED parking lot.

The main reason for break in is to seat the piston rings properly in the piston ring grooves and in the cylinder walls. The best way to accomplish this is at varying moderate engine speeds and loads. If you don't, the engine will immediately begin using a small amount of oil, and continue for the rest of its life.

More properly, it is varying engine RPMs (not necessarily speed) and loads. So, theoretically, you just need to do lots of shifting if you want to maintain a certain speed or just vary speed and rpms all over the place.

800 miles? I always thought it was 1200 miles...but I'll take 800 miles!

That's the biggest myth ... and really a bunch of crock Maybe in the Ol' days that was the case. These days, the only reason to take it easy for is for the brake and clutch pad to set in for the optimal performance. That's all...

But hey!! Its your car!! so do what you fellas want w/ it

Bee, If I understand you correctly-155 out of the ED parking lot is ok. Just joking. I agree with you, & think that with the engine improvements, there isn't the same b/i need. But, I keep hearing about the ED center telling people about the 1,200miles/80 mph/4k rpm.
