Help . . last minute change to itinerary???

With all the snow recently, we have begun to rethink our plans of staying two nights in Salzburg. We are considering a change to Florence. How long does it take to drive from Munich to Florence? We already have two nights lined up in Verona. We're from Arizona (78 degrees today! ) and probably won't adapt well to 20 degree temperatures!

I guess the tradeoff is freezing your arss off two days or burn one day up in a heated car driving your arss off! Suggestions would be helpful. Are we being wimps? Is Salzburg that amazing that we should gut out snow and sleet showers ?

Thanks

Well we did Verona and Florence. Our first day was driving from Munich to Verona. The total time was 6 hours but that included terrible traffic on the Autobahn (stop and go for 45 minutes), and a stop off for almost an hour along the way for gas, food, and photos. The real drive is about 4 hours. Add another 2 hours or so to get to Florence. Maybe 6 hours total? The Brennar pass should be fine this time of year as it is well maintained. Florence is DEFINITELY worth visiting. Verona is also a beautiful city. Let me know if you have any questions about our stays there.

Verona is a good stop-over for a night or two. you can easily reach it in one day from Munich (but why not one night there and one in Venice then?).
From Verona (or Venice) you can reach Florence equally easily in half a day. A good detour after Verona is getting off the freeway in Mantova --great town, great food (try the restaurant "Ochina Bianca") and then continue to Parma (also excellent food) via Sabbioneta. Pick Up the freeway in Parma to Florence.
To find an Hotel in Florence can be a pain in the neck. Better to book in advance. Generally, Florence has a miserable winter weather. Right now it is freezing cold (right at the freezing mark of zero centigrades) all-over Italy.

If you are not familiar with it already, VIAMICHELIN.COM is a great website for route planning. Once you use it to plan a trip, you will become addicted.

Good luck.

I guess you will be cold in both places. There is not much difference you will feel between -22F or -32F unless there are strong winds. Do not worry about the cold that much.

As others have said, Florence is a must see if you have time. I am doing both Florence and Salzburg each for a day. I think it should not be a problem. If in Florence, stay at the Villa Fiesole. I understand this is awesome. Got a great deal since I booked early.

The maps will show you that the drive is about 5.45 hours. You should take extra time for breaks/traffic as iceman has said. Estimate 8 hours!

From what I have read on this board, Salzburg is also a must see. If you like driving,(and your companion does too) you should be fine.

I see we have the same pickup date. Are you planning to be there in the morning?
