ED and US title/tags/etc
I'm going to be moving across the country in the coming months and am looking into doing Munich delivery in May/June. When I leave for Europe a relocation company will be packing my personal goods - and when I get back, I'll be headed to Washington state and awaiting the eventual vehicle.
This will be my first car and I'm wondering when providing insurance and getting my US title/tags happens in the ED order process -- because I'm not looking forward to having to purchase my insurance policy in Michigan and then move, change the policy terms for a new state, all without ever driving the vehicle in the states.
Can anyone shed some light on this - I'm sorry that it is such a basic question! I did some searching of the forums (which are great!) and only found items relating to courtesy delivery.
Kind of related - should I look into ordering from a dealer where I will be moving to instead - and can it all be done without physically visiting the dealership?

Although some dealers may want to see you to be sure you are committed and aren't going to flake on them. May depend on deposit laws in that state. You don't start your insurance until you take delivery in the US...BMW covers you prior to that. If you choose a dealer in your home state, you won't have to worry about re-registering the car, although that can sometimes be done by mail too.

You may have to offer proof of insurance in advance of pickup, but generally your insurance co. can simply write a letter agreeing to cover in the future.
You should be able to register the car in Washington, but you may have to do a bit of legwork if you order through a MI dealer, who probably won't do it for you.
Also, you may be able to arrange a "courtesy" delivery, so the car is delivered to WA, rather than MI, but that's another arrangement.
Probably the easiest thing to do is find a good WA dealer to handle the transaction, perhaps even just by fax--then there will be no problems, because it will show up in WA after you've moved there. By the time thecar arrives, you 'll have new insurance, new licesnsse, etc.

I'm in the same situation that you are in. I'm moving X country in June and I am negotiating with dealerships in the new area. I thought about buying in my current location but didn't think it was feasible nor did I want to arrange car transportation (my relocation package would cover the cost). I'm having no problems negotiating from afar. All you need is a fax machine. The forums provide plenty of information about dealers in the NWest. I found using the references extremely helpful. good luck.

I 'met' a guy on these boards from outside Minneapolis who was looking at buying through my local Seattle dealer if he couldn't get a good deal in his area. He initially had difficulties finding someone ED knowledgable in his nearby towns.
If you need a reference, feel free to PM me!

Edit: Sorry about the double post, was having problems with the computer this AM...
