moving from nyc to la, where should I buy?

Leaving Manhattan and moving to Orange County, CA end of 6/2005. I want to buy an x3 to replace the subway. ED would work perfectly as I have plenty of time before needing a vehicle. Where should I buy from? NYC? Los Angeles? Somewhere in between?

You can buy in NYC and have it delivered to LA. Just need to arrange it with the dealership ahead of time.

Buy it from a dealer in Southern California. If you buy it on the East Coast and have it re-delivered to another dealer you will have to pay up to a $500 "delivery fee" to the receiving dealership. This has been discussed many times on Bimmerfest. It's often called a "courtesy delivery" or such. Not too much of a courtesy if it's 500 bucks.

My salesperson was Marc Datnow at Harloff BMW (North San Diego) 760-753-6301. He's the best.

California has really strict emission requirements, so if you buy a car in NY it may not qualify in California and it will cost you money to modify the engine after the fact. http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/NonCAVeh/NonCAVeh.pdf

You might also be able to save on sales tax depending on what the rates are in NY.

If you buy in NY, you'll have to get the car to LA somehow. Of course, that might not be a bad thing
Timing may be critical, though. If you pick it up in, say April, would it be redelivered to NY by the time you leave ?

Absolutely not true Lisa not on the German cars (except for Diesel, but if you know the rules, it can still be done easily)!!

All U.S. model BMW are "50 State" cars. This means any car distributed by BMWNA will have the CARB sticker in it. It won't matter which state the car is purchased from.

Also, your info on the sales tax is not currently accurate. You will be responsible for the differential in tax rate and payable to CA unless you've owned the car for more than 365 days or the car purchase was contracted on or before 10/15/2004.

On a separate note, to answer sharmbmw's question, I would say neither. CA (and the whole west coast) is a very hot market for luxury cars, as well as NY. This is primarily due to the fact that there are jobs that pays well. As a rule of thumb, you "may" want to check w/ dealers in the midwest and away from the big cities (hint: Akron, OH, Solon, OH, Decatour, GA )

Forget about curtesy delivery... its more of an hassle for everyone. Look at this way. Every dealer being ask to do an "curtesy delivery" knows that he just got screwed out of a deal that he should've sold the car to (namely, YOU) and they will refuse as a practice just to make it difficult for you. It amazes me that lots of folks here throw the term "courtesy delivery" as if it was a standard procedure for a dealer to do. It isn't .

cheers,

beewang
