I strongly recommend the Schlosshotel Lisl (http://www.hohenschwangau.de/lisl0.0.html) and the Villa Jagerhaus (http://www.hohenschwangau.de/jaegerhaus0.0.html).
They are located right in Hohenschwangau and have wonderful views of the two castles.
I stayed in the Jagerhaus on my ED trip. They have free, secured parking, too.

Booked Hotel Hirsch for one night 3-19 / 3-20. Will go to see the castles and head to Geneva on the 20th

A Rick Steve's recommendation: Gutshof zum Schluxen. The setting is bucolic, the castles a beautiful walk through the forest, and the horses and deer running around in the nearby fields charming. A local band was marching around a building in the distance, practicing as we ate our dinner outside.
I enjoyed staying there immensley and Herman (the owner) was very kind in helping me deal with Lufthansa and some missing luggage. Prices are 42 euros per day including the breakfast buffet. 
The hotel is located in the village of Unterpinswang, which is close to Reutte.

Hotel Kurcafe in Fussen. Good prices and it's over a bakery. Smells great when you wake in the morning.
