 International Driver License

I'm planning ED in June with driving from Munich to Hamburg (with German sightseeing in between), and I am considering trying to drive through Netherlands, Belgium, France on the way to England. Would I need an International Driver license. Also, I understand you can transport your car via the Chunnel (riding the train). Anyone know about this?

I took the Chunnel across in 97 during my ED after driving thru all those countries. (Dropoff in London) yes the chunnel was cool. You drive on, following the car in front of you, and keep driving and driving thru a bunch of cars, until you get to the end of the line, and then you sit in your car for the trip across.

I got a speeding ticket in Belguim (cost 200 dm's on the spot). I don't think an IDL is required, excpet perhaps in Switzerland, which seems to be doing everything in their power to keep us out. (I think you also need a visa).

EDIT: A visa is not needed for Switzerland.

It's a cheap bit of insurance. IIRC, one needs one in Austria as well. It's $10 at AAA (plus photos). All it is is a translation of your license (or really a generic one), but it's a decent way to explain to a cop looking to create a problem why you aren't. Chances are you won't need it, but the same can be said for most forms of insurance.

My understanding for an IDL was that it is only required for driving a leased car (Which I had while working over there). I was never asked about it for rental cars or for the ED last year and have driven all over Switzerland, Austria, France, Germany etc.

In their ED paperwork BMW states that Austria requires an IDL. My search on internet has confirmed that.

I would highly recommend that you get an IDL. It will save your from aggravation when a cop stops and he cannot read english and make any sense of your DL.

What's with the visa to Switzerland, is it correct that Americans need one?
