7 day ED trip start in Munich - is Nice too far?
Like many of you, we are headed to Munich in early March. I'm thinking I'd like to get out of the snow and head down to Nice/Monaco. The question is whether this is going to be too much driving in such a short time. Not that I mind , but my wife will be bored out of her mind, not to mention pissed , if she spends her short euro vacation in a car all day. Here is a tenative plan. Friday night - Munich Saturday night - Salzburg? Sunday night - Lake Como? Monday night - Nice/Monaco Tuesday night - Nice/Monaco Wednesday night - Munich (all day driving?) Thursday - Fly home. As I type this, I feel like there would be a lot of time spent in the car, as opposed to actually getting out and seeing the sights. Any insights as to whether it is worth the drive or if you have different suggestions would be appreciated. | | Reply » 7 day ED trip start in Munich - is Nice too far? | Quote: Like many of you, we are headed to Munich in early March. Overall, the drive doesn't seem too long. Using some of the planning software (mapquest/expedia/etc.), you can figure out how far each day's drive it. I tried to keep my drives to 300 miles/day but ended up with 400 mile day from Rome to Monaco. That was a long day, especially with the way the highway winds along the coast in western Italy.

An open jaw ticket USA-Munich Nice-USA was the same price as a USA-Munich round trip. So no financial incentive there.

US to Munich-Nice to US. I am doing Munich to a surrounding city and then head to Nice/Monaco but stop overnight either in Milan or an in between city. The drive from Munich to Nice is about 8hrs or so. You may need to skip Lake Como as I believe that is not on the way to Nice(not sure). Salzburg is an hour away so that is not too bad.

I'm not sure about staying around Nice/Monaco as I have heard a lot about the crime. Also, driving around Monaco can be quite difficult.

After Switzerland I went to Lake Como and then to Nice. As everyone has mentioned in previous posts, the best thing to do is to drop off your car in Nice. All this talk about theft in Nice is mostly irrelevant if you park in a garage at your hotel (I had much more expensive cars parked next to mine). I think you have too much driving as is and driving back to Munich will for sure make your wife nuts. Btw, my trip was two weeks and I tried to stay at least two days at each place. My suggestion, assuming you are 100% set on French Riviera, would be to skip Salzburg and head straight to Lake Como (6 hour drive according to viaMichelin), stay there for a couple of days and then go to Nice. That way you will have days when you drive and days when you have a vacation.
