Still not sure whether to take time to go in the opposite direction of my ED journey and visit the 5 series factory. I was thinking of picking up the car in the morning and driving to the factory then driving down to Fussen to spend the night. Should I skip the factory tour and just head for Fussen and tour the castles? |

How can they close Dingolfing? I wish I had done the tour there instead of or in addition to Munich. It's apparently ultra-modern.

Should I skip the factory tour and just head for Fussen and tour the castles? | You know how I feel about Dingolfing so I will let others chime in on that issue. W/ repect of driving to fussen after Factory tour at DGF, you should know that:
1) By the time you are done w/ the tour and driving southward it will be dark by the time you reach Munich, and probably 6:00PM at Fussen.
2) The castle is mightier on the outside than inside. Having been there once, I will never pay to get to the inside again. Rather, I will take the road split-off to the right and goto the back bridge.
Just my 2 cents worth,

How did you come out on the ticket?...
I'm getting closer..... sending my check to Jim this week. My car apparently is entering the 2nd phase this week.
It looks like there are 3 castles in and around Fussen, with Neuschwanstein being the coolest looking on the outside. I've heard lots of bad press on the inside being disappointing. I hear that Linderhof and Hohenschwangau are worth seeing.
I was going to spend one day visiting Dingofling then back to Munich for the remainder of the day. On to Fussen, the castles and the Romantic Road (the next day) staying in Rothenburg at the end of the day. Lately... I've been wondering if I should "waste" a day at Dingofling and in Munich and maybe just head for Fussen.
I'm basically asking, "is the factory tour really worth it? As I remember you said, "if you've seen one factory, you've seen them all". Well, I haven't seen any of the factories yet....... so

Neuschwanstein was never completed on the inside, so you only get to see limited parts of it. I've been there twice and that's probably enough.
Hohenschwangau was completed and has a more interesting interior. You see most of the rooms in the main part of the castle and it has original furnishings ("See the bed where Richard Wagner slept!"). It's much smaller than Neuschwanstein.
I really like Linderhof. The rococo styling of the interior is over the top in some of the rooms, but well worth seeing. And the grotto is pretty impressive as well. Hopefully they've finished the exterior work so that you can enjoy real views of the palace rather than the (huge) photograph on a tarp that covered the scaffolding around the palace.
If you're at Linderhof, you might as well consider visitng the nearby Ettal monastery. Beautifully painted ceilings and interior.
