 Looking for German vacation suggestions

I'm taking a vacation to Germany (not ED unfortunately) the last weekend of February. I'm looking for suggestions and information on places to go and things to do while there. I'll be flying into Frankfurt, spending some time in Munich and Bitburg. Where can I find some info (in English) on BMW or Porsche museums and factory tours? I've done some searching but everything I've found is in German. I'd also like to go check out the Nürburgring. Will the track even be open this time of year? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think the factory tour is closed for few months.
Innsbruck, Salzburg are my favorite places.

Many years ago, I saw the Porsche Museum and both the BMW and Mercedes Benz factory tours. Personally, I liked the two factory tours, and we did the BMW tour again in 2002 when we did the E39 European Delivery.

I recall the Porsche Museum was pretty small.

From MotorTrend.com 8/19/04:

Porsche AG has announced plans to build a new museum adjacent to its main production plant in Stuttgart, Germany, to display its unsurpassed collection of historic Porsche road and race cars.

Scheduled to begin construction in 2005, the new Porsche Museum will be part of the current Porsche complex that includes the sales subsidiary and showroom, the production plant and the tourist delivery center. When completed, it will house some 80 vehicles and contain an operating workshop, where visitors can observe the skills involved in historic car restoration, as well as attractive catering and meeting facilities that will provide a venue for events held by internal departments and external organizations. It will also provide a convenient attraction for those Americans taking European delivery of their new Porsche sports car at the Porsche factory.

"Our heritage is an honor and a commitment at one and the same time - but a commitment that Porsche willingly accepts," commented Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, Porsche AG president and chief executive. "In the new museum, tradition will have an assured place and come to life more vividly than ever before. The new museum will be far more than a place to look back at the past and preserve a record of earlier achievements. It will be a functional center that groups together all our historic and contemporary knowledge about Porsche."

Porsche's current museum, also located on the grounds of Porsche's main production plant, is only capable of displaying 20 of the Museum's 300 historic Porsches on a rotating basis. For this reason and so people around the world can experience Porsche's tradition and excellence, many of the Museum's vehicles, ranging from a 1912 Austro Daimler Fire Engine to the latest Porsche Le Mans winning racecars, are also displayed and/or driven at various international historic-car events such as the recent Porsche Rennsport Reunion II at Daytona International Speedway which featured the very first Porsche ever built along with four other historic cars from the Museum. Even with the Museum's larger vehicle display area, this "mobile museum" function will remain a part of Porsche's historic car activities in the future.

I found this guy's pictures of his visit to the Porsche Museum.

The BMW museum is closed, but there is a new trasportation collection in a separate building of the Deutsches Museum (the Verkehrszentrum at Theresienhöhe). When I was there last Fall it had a special BMW hydrogen fuel exhibit as well as all the good old stuff. There is an English language web site at:

If you are interested in aircraft, don't miss the "Flugwerft Schleißheim"--also part of the Deutsches Museum, but just north of Munich.

There is a relatively new modern art museum in Munich, the Pinakothek der Moderne. It has a very nice design collection including a dozen cars and motorcycles. URL:

Innsbruck and Salzburg are a short drive or train distance away and are worth visiting. Dachau's concentration camp is a sad part of history but may be worth visiting for you and it is also close to Munich.

I had a similar itinerary to yours on my first trip to Germany. I visited Frankfurt, Rothenburg, Schloss Neuschwanstein, Munich and Salzburg.

You should try driving on the Romantische Strasse or Romantic Road. It's a scenic twisty road that runs north/south thru Rothenburg.
