 Radar Detector?

Anyone use a radar detector while driving in Europe, do they work there and are these illegal?

It varies by country. Only in the UK and Germany is it still legal to own and use a detector. Otherwise, you can expect confiscation, big fines and even the vehicle to be impounded (for example France, where it is illegal just to own one) if you are caught with it.

If you have one, and stray into another country, you ideally need to pull over at the border, unplug it, and shove it in the spare wheel well.

Not true in Germany. You'll get your butts kicked by the Polizei Don't do it!!

Leave your V1 at home. Dunno why you need it. Save the speed-runs on the Bahn.

cheers,

Hopefully your car will not be searched by a Radar Detector Detecting Dog.

Interesting - my sources tell me they are still permitted. They were recently banned from use (not ownership) in Italy. That being the case, then, the only country where you are still free to find out if you are being spied on is the UK - though I am sure some Brusseline bureaucrat will soon put a stop to that sort of subversive, individualistic anomaly .

I didn’t see a single speed trap, or any speed control effort for that matter in over 1200 miles through Germany, Austria…… Italy and into France. What I did see was a whole lot of Europeans driving like maniacs and going very very VERY fast everywhere, regardless of posted speed limits. I had the same thought about taking my Passport along before ED, I never thought about it there. If you have the balls to jump in and hang on, especially on the autobahn and autostrada (not to mention driving up the coast of Lake Como-Italy), you’ll get plenty of speed, particularly during the “break-in” period.
