ED w/kids
I've been thinking of taking my 8 yr old boy to share the ED experience in late March. I've read of others taking their kids and wonder what they did--besides look at castles. I understand that the Augsburg Legoland may not be open for the season yet at that time. Any suggestions/experiences?

Plan to go to Fussen http://www.hohenschwangau.de/index.php?id=430 and see the two castles there and then go to Geneva and southern France then to paris and drop the car off in Frankfurt. I think the castles, the scenery and the male bonding will have to satisfy him on this trip. France will hopefully be a bit nicer in March than Germany.
Used to have a summer place in southern France some 30 years ago in the Ardeche region so will show him around there. It's a beatifull area! http://www.ardeche.com/
Will also try to fit in a drive on the new worlds talles bridge in Millau, France. http://www.viaducdemillaueiffage.com/
He's already a Bimmer maniac so we'll enjoy the driving.
Also considered the factory tour but just found out he needs to be 14! We'll see how that goes, we'll have to find some high-heel sneekers

From what I understand, to be safe you should give the process about 90 days, 60 minimum.

They've got a large model train layout that they demonstrate at various intervals. There's also a driving simulator that's built out of an M roadster that he might enjoy (my son did - see attached picture).
Too bad it will be so early in the year -- in summer you could have taken him to the English Garden to ogle other things. (Considering your handle...)
The castles near Fussen are good, as suggested. Again, it's too early in the year, otherwise you could also try the luge runs (cement or metal) in the area.
What you do with your son depends on where you go. As my trip included Vienna, we went to the Prater Park. We also sampled endless Viennese desserts, since my son is something of a foodie. In Salzburg, if you're good at recreating history, you could impress your son by touring Mozart's birth house. Although there's a museum in there, it takes a bit of imagination to picture a young Mozart running through the house. Near Paris is Euro Disneyland, if that's your cup of tea.

Kids at that age do not appreciate art museums and there are just so many mountains for them to appreciate. My suggestion in March is to arrive in Munich but depart from Amsterdam. My kids loved Amsterdam as it is a really neat city with fun things to do and great restaurants. It's also a great departure city as the dropoff location for BMW is at the airport although I dropped off my family in Amsterdam, then drove to the airport to drop off the car and took a bus back to the city as there was no need for the car in Amsterdam. On the other hand there are great places to visit outside of the city and you can also go to Brussels and Antwerp which are not far away.
