Fast Food?
I will be traveling with my 9 year old son to pick up our new 545i in mid March. While I will most likely enjoy the local cuisine in Germany and France, somehow I know the little one will keep popping the question "can we eat something I like".
I am sure there might be a Mcdonalds here and there but are there any other similar places (American or local) in Germany and France on the major highways that a small person might want to eat at?

IMO, especially by age 9, you should require them to eat as much local cuisine as possible. It's a learning experience. They can have MickeyD's at home. Personally, I'd forbid my kid from having anything American to eat for the entire time. No Coke either.
But that's just me.
In response to your actual question, unfortuantely, you can find American fast food just about EVERYWHERE in Europe. It's easier to find American chain restaurants than it is local "mom & pop" places in some towns.

Yeah, MickyD's is everywhere in Germany - even in small towns. From what I've seen, other American chains are also present but not nearly as widespread.
Sounds like the trip of a life time for your little guy, I'd definately encourage him to try the local fare too!

Unfortunatelly you can find pizza Hut, Burger King, Mc Donalds in most major European cities. I pretty much force mine to the local cuisine, specially having been to Spain several times with both since 6months of age. it depends on what they are used to eating at home. You'll be fine b/c you will find the local fast food restaurants in Europe specially in the major cities, but rarely in the smaller towns.

Highway rest stops frequently have a restaurants in them that aren't quite MickeyD's, but will allow you to get fast, local food. I got some great paninis in Italy that way. Most gas stations at the rest stops have something available that beats the typical minimart here.

As others have said, most cities have american fast food places. Personally, we ate at those place ONLY at rest stops on our drives, and even then only two meals.
