Can one use the US issued Shell, Mobil, BP gas cards to pay for gas in Germany, Switzerland or France?

A few years ago (2001 ish) they did not work overseas. The only exceptions being a few oddball Shell/Esso stations either located on US Military Bases or very near them (and hence server predominantly US customers). So unless you card is a MasterCard or Visa affiliated with Shell or Exxon, I wouldn't count on it working.

For the first fiil-up I tried my BP card at a BP station outside Wurzburg and it wouldn't work. The clerk (Who was an American BTW) explained to me that Euro gas cards cards have 16 characters and US have 14. Look at your cards and you'll see. In the next year or so America is joining the rest of the world and adding more digits. So I just paid cash the rest of the trip or used my Visa card.

My point was, you have to have those 16 characters for them to work in Europe and I did read that companies are changing them to be in line with EU specs. Your cards may be newer than mine.
