To do ED or not to do ED

Well after seeing pictures of other members doing ED I just can't imagine not doing it. But I have read about how you are not supposed to take the car over 100 MPH during the break in period. Something in the back of my mind it telling me that if I do ED I will be cruising at 99MPH and possibly going over it. I mean come on... This would probably be my only time in my life to drive an UDM on the Autobahn. So I am afraid that if I do ED delivery I would do something stupid that would hurt my baby. What do you guys think? Would it be ok to go over 100 just once? When I was at my BMW center they could not have been nicer about the car. But when I mentioned ED there attitude changed a hundred percent. They said that it would only save you 1000 bucks and is not recommended. Do they not make as much money off of the car when you do ED? If anyone has any pictures of them doing ED that have not been posted please post them!!!!! Please.
Thanks,
David

David,

Do some searches through the forum. If you find the right dealer, you can save more than $1000. The fact is that many dealers don't negotiate heavily on domestic delivery vehicles because they come out of a limited allocation.

Many dealers will sell you an ED vehicle for $1000 over ED invoice. This can amount to $4K - 5K off the sticker for mainstream models. More if you are looking at a $70,000 car.

Be ware of dealers that say they can't negotiate on the "published" ED price. This supposed discounted price is the retail price. So when paying this number, it is just like paying sticker.

ED is a great experience. The savings you get will just about pay for your trip.

Take a look at this thread to figure out what you should pay for a good ED deal. Look up ED invoice price for the base vehicle, and add any options/packages at cost (not retail). Don't forget the delivery charge. Add about $1000 to this number for a fair price.

One more note - as far as the 100 mph limit, there is also an engine speed restriction of 4K revs. But for many cars (especially with a 6-speed manual), you can go very fast before hitting this figure. Many people momentarily disregard the road speed limit and let their vehicles go up to 115 or 120 mph. Also, if you make the trip long enough, you can get through much of your break in and let her rip.

Do it.
Yeah, do it. And plan your trip end still in Germany. If you do a couple weeks, you'll easily put 1200 miles on the car, and get to hit whatever speed you want.

I don't think they make as much money of it as a normal deal, plus there's more paperwork and a longer wait for the money (although not near as long as your wait for final delivery. )

As the other's have said, find a more ED-friendly dealer. Mine wasn't the most knowledgeable (compared to their claims) about the process (thank god for this forum), but was reasonable once I let him know it was this way or I'd go elsewhere.

The money savings is a nice fringe benefit, but the trip is so worth it. It ranks as one of the best things I've ever done in my life, and I have a great souvenier in the garage. This is why BMW offers the program, because once you do it, you think about the things you'll do different the next trip (read between the line: buy another new BMW).

If I could, I'd buy 2005 just for the pleasure of ED. Maybe I can talk the girlfriend into an X3...

I am currently in the process of deciding if I will be doing ED. I got the same attitude from the dealer after I mentioned ED and they would not give me ED invoice + $1500 dealer profit. he told me he could sell the same car at a much higher profit. Luckily one of the members here gave me a dealers phone number and information in Atlanta who will be able to meet the price I am looking for. Depending which car you are looking to buy you will be able to do 1000-1500 over ED invoice. I could sent you the link to these prices if you need it. Being a Europe fanatic I could not see not doing it and if you are conservatice and not spent a lot over there, it is worth it. I do wonder about going over 100mph, I believe the key is not exceeding a certain rpm(not sure??)
