First time BMW owner(M Coupe)/have warranty question

As an ex-semi-skilled mechanic who likes to do all the work on his car, I have questions about BMW and how they react to doing your own maintenance during the warranty period.

My silver M Coupe could be here as soon as Tuesday and I'd like to know can I start planning on doing my own scheduled maintenance or does BMW demand it all be done by them in order to have a valid warranty?

In addition is there any built-in scheduled maintenance that comes with my purchase?

Honestly, I did no homework on this car besides what I did on the original M Roadster/Coupe years ago. Whan I saw the new bodied coupe online I ordered it the next day.

This is not to save cash. The fact is I trust no mechanic be it Ford or Ferrari, so I'm not going to start trusting a BMW mechanic unless I'm forced to.

Thanks for any advice or input from anyone who like to do all maintenance themselves.

5K for engine oil is excessive, IMO. Mid cycle cahnge is not a bad idea. But BMW also covers an annual oil change, so like my M3 gets the oil changed every year, no matter when teh mileage, which has been working out to be about 7 - 8 K.

Diff and tranny fluid every 25 - 35K is about right to me.

Also, the Moss-Magnuson act means they CANNOT void warrnty for doing your own work, unless the work you did (or parts you replaced) fail, then you are on your own for that damage or parts. If you use improper fluids, that system will not be warrantied. So if you put 5W-20 oil in the engine, they can void yoru engine warranty for oil related problems. Tehy can't say the coil packs are bad and they won't cover them if you put the wrong oil in, and they can't void warranty on say the brakes or diff, etc.

On 9/18/06, Freehold BMW changed the oil in my 2005 Z4 at 15,000 miles. They neglected to put the O-ring gasket into the oil filter cover. It leaked out 1/2 quart of oil over the next 50 miles. Luckily I noticed the puddle on my garage floor. I put an O-ring in myself and took it to the dealer for them to clean up the mess of the oil all over the driver's side of the engine. However they washed it, they left a chaulky, white powdery mess all over the engine. It now looks as though it has been dunked in salt water! I'm ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED!! I called BMW Customer Relations, but they are of no help. I'm furious about this and don't know what to do except warn everyone I can find - WATCH OUT FOR BMW SERVICE - THEY MIGHT RUIN YOUR CAR!!!! (By the way, the intermittent wipers stopped working, and Freehold BMW wants to replace my windshield to correct this. But, I really don't want to let them near my car, now...)

I do all of my own maintenance and repair if possible.

It's interesting and you can control the quality.
I have most of the S54 engine tools and many others.

1200 mile check changes engine, tranny and differential oil.
I change my oil after that at 4500 which goes with my Blackstone oil analysis.

The dealer has been accommodating me coding wise.
Only missing thing is the code reader and reset tool which I'm
looking into.

Do a search here. Lot of what you need has been posted.

I let my dealer do most of the work during warranty. I did a few extra oil changes myself and a few mods. I only have warranty for a few years and I'll have the car for a long time so I get plenty of practice later on.

Sorry to hear this. Most dealerships are bad, but not *this* bad. Try Circle in Shrewsbury - make sure you get Tim M. as your service advisor. JMK is known for having the best service dept. in NJ, a little out of the way on 22 in Union, though. Downside is, if you didn't buy your car from them they don't have to give you a loaner. Sometimes if you lean on them they will.

And neighbor....I'm in Middletown.
