80s Flashback-- just returned from a trip to China and HK

EDIT: Moderator please feel free to move this to the "General Automotive" forum-- that's where I meant to post this.

Wow-- holy 80s Flashback batman (automotively speaking). Almost all the taxis in Hong Kong are Toyota "Crown Comforts", which look like midsize 80s Japanese sedans. I think they're specially produced for use as taxis, and are indeed based on an older Crown model. Its kind of strange to see so many of these 80s style cars running around; even the interiors look like something out of the 80s. Its also clear that this model represents a precursor to the cars that would eventually compose the Lexus line-up (i'm sure someone more versed in JDM cars will jump in and correct me here).

I was also in southern China (Guangzhou) and saw lots of 80s style Jettas, Passats (now called Santana 3000s), and 80s Audi 100 (5000) based cars running around as taxis. The Audi 100 based car is made by a company named FAW and is called the "Hongqi", apparently:

Even the interior is straight out of the old Audi! After riding in a bunch of deathtrap Jetta taxis, this one seemed like true luxury in comparison. BTW, I've never felt so close to death as I have riding around in a Chinese taxi. NY Taxi drivers are top notch drivers in comparison. If there's a large dump truck or bus that can be cut off or swerved around, these guys wil go for it. The incredibly poor air quality also added to the "like being in Hell" experience.

As a side note, nearly all the BMWs I saw in China were e60 5 series. I guess that makes sense since BMW recently setup a Chinese plant to produce the 5 so its probably the cheapest BMW model that can be bought in China.

FInally, I found it interesting that in both China and Hong Kong, Toyota and Honda sell the "American version" Accord and Camry. I'd always thought that the versions we get here are only sold here. Not true.

I was in China myself, on business, from July-Aug '05. The thing that I couldn't get over was how they drive towards oncoming traffic, in the opposite lane, when they feel the car in front of them is going too slow. Also, something else that I found interesting was the fact that all of the cars had smaller engines than the one's brought stateside. The highlight of the trip to me was when we got on the freeway, talk about your China Autobahn!!!!! Everybody is driving with the gas pedal heavily planted down....my favorite. Every car is doing at least 80-100+mph!
