There is an independent car rental place 2 blocks from my office that rents high-end insurance replacement cars. There is a Z4 2.5 that has been sitting there, same space, and hasnt moved in like a month. The brakes are 100% brown and caked with rust. I'm not talking the spotty rust you often see on discs, I mean they look like chocolate cakes behind the hubs. Would this car be safe to drive if rented today? What would have to be replaced? on the rental agency. |

It will be fine. One or two stops and the discs will be normal.
A little extra pad wear but no safety problem.

Rotors are cast-iron, and rust up almost immediately after getting wet (have`nt you ever noticed this after washing your car?). Depending on what might have been deposited on the rotors when the car was parked, yeah, they may be quite rusty after sitting awhile. A couple of gradual applications of the pedal should be all it takes to remove this.

Regards, Bob | Okay, maybe I wasnt clear enough. This isnt regular garden variety rust that we all have seen on the rotors. This car has been left at Ocean & Pico in Santa Monica immobile for a month, that is, across the street from the Pacific Ocean. Very, very salty moist air.
The rotors are caked in rust, I mean it looks thick and you cannot see ANY metal on the rotors. It looks like someone put thick brown icing all over them.

They are fine. They make make some noise and you may even feel it a little, but it will wear off soon enough.
