20 yrs in bimmers, now no temperature gauge
Boy, after driving my (and my family's) E28, E36, E24, E36 Z3, E34 touring, E39 touring, and my recent E46 touring, it's really hard getting used to the absence of a temperature gauge in my new E61. Each time I'm driving away from the house, I look down to check the temperature, and there's just this void. Oh, but thank goodness the ol' "mpg" monitor is still there  Is there an I-drive submenu that tells engine temp? I'm actually a little worried since I'll be doing cross-desert drives during the summer from AZ to CA. | | Reply » 20 yrs in bimmers, now no temperature gauge |
What I want to know is, how do you know when the engine's warmed up so you can "get busy" with the car? I don't go full throttle or go past 3.5k RPM until things are warmed up, and I always wait a few minutes past that.

Get a LeatherZ gauge kit... that'll give you oil temp  . Mine is on my way..

I have an oil temp gauge and a RPM sensor on the tach that shows how far you can rev the engine. It moves higher as the engine warms up.

It moves higher as the engine warms up. | Just to be clear here, "engine temp" is actually EITHER coolant temp or oil temp. Coolant warms up a lot faster than oil - so when you're coolant temp gauge is "in the middle", the oil (which is a much better representation of 'engine temp') may not yet be at operating temp.
I don't know about the 6er, but on the 3-series, all non-M cars only have a coolant temp gauge. The M3 has an oil temp gauge in place of the instantaneous MPG vacuum gauge on the bottom of the tach.

This has been discussed ad nauseam. Even the E46 guage was nothing more than an idiot light.
