if "I" drive an older BMW and "You" drive a newer BMW, are you looked apon at a higher level of status or is a BMW driver the same as the next because they are both enjoying the experience that BMW gives no matter what year make model or style they drive? because lately on a few BMW forums i see people cutting others down because they maybe drive a newer one than someone else. whats everyones take on this? |

I admire older BMW's on the road.

I think its more of a maturity level thing, not a car age thing A guy in a old 2002(model not year) could very well have tons more status and money then a guy in a new 6 series

Are you buying the car for status or are you buying a nice car that's fun to drive?
If you are a status seeker then you should only buy a new fully loaded 760Li or an M5. Anything else will make you inferior. Then of course you have to get a new one every year to maintain your "status."
If you just want a nice fun car then buy whatever you like. Who cares if you have a used one or a new one. BMW's are great cars. Period. Most people will admire them anyway as long as you take care of them.
In my opinion the latter group is made up of better people in general. I don't understand why anyone would think they are better than anyone else because of the kind of car they drive. I've known a lot of people who drive themselves deeply into debt just to have the "best" of everything, including (unfortunately) a big new BMW, Mercedes, etc. Then of course there is another debate: Which implies more status, BMW or Mercedes?, or are both groups inferior to those who drive the really expensive cars?

I love BMWs. From 318s to 850s and anything in between. What matters to me is that the car is tasteful...and not 'ed out or riced up. If someone takes pride in their ride that's good enough for me.
I wish I still had my E46 '98 323is because that car, while not the highest powered machine on the street, had a certain feeling in the steering and suspension that my E46 325i w/ ZSP, or the E90, does not have. I regret getting rid of that car.
So...IMO, there is a certain pureness that older BMWs have (E30s, E36s, etc.) that cannot be matched by the new ones and I am envious of people that own pristine examples of these cars!

No. Not all BMW drivers are created equal. There are those who can actually drive, those who want to think they can actually drive, and there are the status seeking poseur morons.
