Right, but I've already taken that about as far as I can afford to go, so I'm just exploring what's out there. If, as Pinecone sez, I just leave out the pad entirely, won't there be noise and heat issues w/the paint?...(and if not, why is the pad there to begin with?)...

You're better off spending $ on the stuff that counts: reduce rotating mass.

I took the pad off of my 97 1.9 and did not notice any difference in noise and had no problems with the paint on the hood. The oem pad was very light.

You may notice a little more noise, but then your car is pretty noisey anyway. As far as the paint, the sufrace right next to the headers is probably doing just fine and is the same paint that is under the hood. Additionally, the hood has an external surface to shed heat with.

The name of pad part is sound insulating engine hood.
The Z4 has no pad.

So, based on knowledge gained from this thread, I just removed the pad entirely. As mentioned, it will make no difference w/heat, and the only noticeable sound difference is at high idle of about 950-1000rpm, a bit more boominess; no other real differences. And another 2lbs 2oz taken out of the Z! From high up on the front end, no less. Thanx to all who posted!
