I am trying to change the alternator pulley and it needs a special tool. The bentley manual calls out tool 12 3 100. Is this available through BMW and how much does it cost? ( I don't have the etk or a windows machine to use it on) It looks like a 24MM socket would fit the bolt, and a 8 MM allen wrench will hold the shaft. I could stick the allen through the socket drive hole and maybe use vise grips to turn the socket , but that would bugger up the socket, was hoping someone here had a better idea. This is for my 92 525, but probably the same for the Z as they use a lot of common parts. -- Scott |

I just used an impact socket..(while the belt was still on, of course...)...

If all else fails, you could take the alternator to a shop that rebuilds foreign alternators and have them change the pulley for you.

-- Scott | Looks like a wrench. They call it a ring spanner.

Thanks for the pricing, Ron.
as a follow up, I found that an impact wrench and 24 MM socket took the nut off, no need to hold the shaft.
As a side note, I am on the third alternator. The first one was the wrong size, the second was rebuilt incorrectly, too much play in the shaft. Hope the third one works.

Actually if you have good air you don't even need to have the belt on when you change a pulley. I put a drop of locktite on the tread when I reinstall, also with an air wrench.
