Motorola Phone & BMW Docking Cradle - Help!

My wife & I (2006 X5 & 2006 550) have Motorola E815 phones and BMW docking cradles installed in each car.
We each often leave our phone in the docking cradle in the car overnight for days at a time.
I can't figure out how the phone/dock are supposed to work in that situation. If anyone has this phone and dock and uses it as we do, can you explain:
- is there anyway to have the phone charge when the ignition is off for more than a limited time, and if so for how long (we often find that the battery is way down or dead when starting the car in the am)?
- does the "charger time" setting in the Car settings menu on the phone itself make any difference (it doesn't seem to)?
- is there any way to have the phone power off when you leave the car and on again when you restart the car? Does the power off delay setting on the phone have anything to do with this (it doesn't seem to)? Do the car settings on the phone for auto answer and auto hands free effect this at all? If you leave the phone on and have it set on auto answer, will calls go to voicemail when you're not in the car (they seem to most of the time)?

If you can't answer any of the above (and my SA can't and Motorola won't), can you tell me how you use the phone and dock if you tend leave it in the car? We would like to avoid having to take the phones out of the cars each night to charge them if possible.

Thanks
