 Are BMWs a good value?

I am doing some research on new vehicles today and looked at the new Honda Civic Si.

I am absolutely amazed what you get for $21k:

200hp world class motor (30/40 mpg)

honda's great 6 six speed manual

moonroof, satellite navigation (touch screen / voice activated)

350 watt XM stereo (MP3 compatible/PC Card)

front, side and curtain airbags

ABS, 17" wheels.

EBD brake system

Speed sensitive volume control, steering wheel mounted

security system

and nice little touches like rear seat ducts, aluminum pedals etc.

Now i have owned many BMW's and Hondas, and it is really amazing to me the level of equipment and technology you get in a Honda versus a 325i. And it still really amazes me that Car and Driver continously rates the BMW tops in its tests, despite the fact that the 330i they tested this month had all kinds of electronic problems and almost killed one of the drivers due to a failure of the brakes!!!!

"Then the ABS lamp lit. We tried to execute one stop on our high-desert test road and nearly executed a 360 spin at 70 mph instead (thus, our braking number is from a previous test). Shortly thereafter several airbag-malfunction warnings lit up."

Now we all know Honda has far better quality than BMW, but I was truly amazed at the level of sophistication found in a "budget" car that is almost $15,000 less than a similarly equipped 325i. And to top it off, BMW still has the nerve to charge their customers $475 for paint....???

Is a 3 series a good value?

Are you honestly trying to compare a Honda Civic Si econo car/hot hatch to a 325 family/sports sedan?

Good luck on your fishing trip.

If all you care about gadgets instead of the driving experience then Acura/Honda cars are for you. Now if you are after a drivers car first than a BMW is right for you. The reason BMWs are highly reknowned is for their driving excitement, everything else comes second.

BTW- The civic motor is nice but i wouldnt go out my way and call it "World Class", the M3's S54 3.2 Liter 333hp inline 6 puts out 100+hp/liter now thats a "World Class engine".

Honda Civics are great cars. However, we need to be realistic as to why there is a $15k diference betwen a Civic and a BMW.

If you want to compare two cars...

Compare the Civic to an Acura TL.

And also the 200HP is only at high revs. Vtech engine's average driving HP is down around 150HP or 25% less unless you plan on redlining all the time.

Personally I am leary of engines originally designed for one HP rating that are tweaked so high to get more HP.

I have extensively driven many Hondas and BMWs and I'll be the first to admit that BMWs handle better, but IMO, not better enough to justify the price difference.

And the Civic Si motor puts out 110 hp per liter, so it is world class by your definition. And last time I checked, Honda builds one of the best engines in the world, anytime, anywhere. Check Honda's F1 racing heritage. BMW keeps ripping off Honda's engine technology (first VTEC, than VANOS).

With that logic, why not by a Kia, is a Civic really worth 10k more than a Kia?

Is an Accord worth 10K more than a Civic?

If you can't afford or justify the cost of a car, it does not mean there is no value for someone else to do so.

500,000 3 series sold in the US every year. I suppose all the folks are whacked.
