Nikasil and Alusil
First time poster...and that's because I currently own a Land Rover, but wait, I'll tell you why I am here invading your forum.
I have the 1997 w/ a v8 engine. That being said. Remember back when BMW had issues with thier engines...Where would I be able to find documentation referring to the liability, issues, problems, repairs and/or replacement, remedy involving the BMW engines in the mid 1990's involving Nikasil and Alusil. In addition, where would I be able to locate documents that state which engines where affected, specifically and including Land Rover engines. Please contact me if you have any questions. My dealer is in no way assisting me and leaving me with a high prices bill. What can I do to fix this issue? Thanks for your assistance and please email me directly at lrxd@hotmail.com with q's and comments. Thanks again for the assistance.

| | Reply » Nikasil and Alusil | I don't think Land Rovers came with a BMW engine in 1997. My 1999 Disco II had a 4.0L Rover engine that was derived from a Buick engine designed in the 60's. Previous Discos had a 3.9L version of the same engine, and RR's had 4.0 and 4.6L versions. I'm pretty sure all LR's had engines using this architecture up until around 2003 or so, when the Range Rover got the 4.4L BMW M62 (which was Alusil, by the way).
IIRC, BMW's "solution" to the Nikasil issue was to extend the engine warranty to 6 years/100k miles. If a Nikasil engine failed a compression test within this time period, they replaced the block with an Alusil one. If not, too bad, you keep your Nikasil.
But someone else can feel free to correct me.

| | Reply » Nikasil and Alusil | You can look at the Wikipedia page, although their accuracy isn't absolute as of late
