 How important is service?

After four BMWs and being on the wait list for the E90 M3 at two different dealerships I have really started having doubts if (in my case) the E90 M3 is a good decision for me. I would really appreciate any insights.

I have been really looking forward to the next generation V8 M3 for some time, but am starting to have second thoughts simply because my dealership (San Antonio BMW Center) sucks so much. I love driving BMWs, reading Roundel, being a BMWCCA member. I currently have a 545 and the M3 cab, and have had to start driving an hour and half to Austin (great service!) in order to get decent care. I am a physician, and the time commitment this entails is starting to get old.

My dealership used to be pretty awesome with satisfaction scores in the high 90's and over the last few years they have fired four service managers as well as most of their experienced technicians have left. Their scores are now somewhere near the 60's,

I don't want to make this post too long or whiney but to give you a brief idea of the service on even one occasion. Though this level of poor quality is the norm for my every visit there. The dealership takes six days to perform a level one service. When I picked up my M3 from the level one service the hood started to come up on the highway because they hadn't latched it! When I got home my engine was covered in oil, not because they left the cap off, but because from what I suspect the valves being over-tightened during the service, leading to my vanos and timing chain being broken, and the oil on the engine. Had to go back for another few weeks. You can never get anyone on the phone, they usually don't return calls, you have to drive over to speak to someone, and even with an appointment a month in advance in order to get a loaner, on arrival you are told 9 times out of 10 that no loaner is available. Since September of this year with most of the time spent sitting in their parking lot waiting for an available bay, each of my cars has spent 26 days at the dealership.

I have tried to take every action I can think of: I called BMWNA, emailed them, written them letters, and given poor customer satisfaction scores. So I am starting to think I would be insane to continue down this road with another BMW until there is an alternative or the dealership improves. I have had to start looking at the offerings from Mercedes and Audi for my options when I probably never would have otherwise.

How does everyone else feel? Does anyone have any other ideas of who to contact that could make a difference? interestingly enough, Mercedes here in San Antonio, also had horrible service for the same reason; no competition locally. Mercedes just allowed another dealership locally who pride themselves on their customer service and now the old dealership is now bending over backwards to retain customers.

I feel your pain regarding the BMW Center of San Antonio. Have you spoken with their GM? I've also experienced damages when they've worked on my car. A few months ago I overheard several service technicans talking amongst themselves and I was not at all impressed with them. It must be hard to find good techs in SA.

Don't even get me started on the difficulty I've had trying to get a simple oil change under warranty -- I have a previous post on this.

It's hard to believe that poor service could affect the purchase of another BMW, but in my case it just might.

I've heard rumors of a new BMW dealership opening near Boerne in the future; so if it's true there may be hope.

Sad, sorry to hear that.

A good dealer and service department can really make the car.

I *really* like my car, but the fact that my dealer is a) conveniently located b) offers free loaners (last time: X3 woot!) c) has free coffee/danish/etc. d) offers BMW CCA discount e) car is on-time, washed and vacuumed out when ready, f) service is performed to the customers expecations, g) offers free Saturday car washes (I don't use but they are available):

Fields BMW Orlando Fla rocks

In your shoes I'd be checking into the Audi dealer's rep. If similar situation I'd stick with the bimmer?

Damn i just cant imagine going through that kind of horrible service. If i was in your shoes i would switch to MB or Audi cause that type of service is unacceptable. I just love our local BMW dealer its service is outstanding and now i know why i always bump into customers from SA. If you dont mind the hour commute back and forth then it shouldnt be a problem but since your time is valuable i would seriously consider another brand. Anyways good luck!

Wow...that's pretty bad service for a premium car brand and I'm surprised BMWNA let it get to that level. Let me ask you this- If a physicians office treated their patients that way, how many of them would look for a new doctor?....I would think most of them. I know I have done it. Some dealers just don't get it. They can make or break a relationship. My local dealers are OK here on Long Island..but I never get that feeling that they are going out of their way for me or that they really care.
I've started watching this board for a few weeks now and I am now working with Adrian (site sponsor) on replacing my 330 with a new 530. Yes...I'll shop locally, but I'll give the business to the person who earns it. I'm in NY- he is in GA....but he goes out of his way to return calls and treat me professionaly..
Your in a tough situation...you obviously like the brand and are willing to put up with some inconvenience...but it shouldn't be that way. I would seriously go look at a A6/A8 and see what they are like...pretty good looking cars IMO....
Good luck-
Pete

I drive 2 hours each way to get good service and a loaner car. I pass by 4-5 dealers on my way also, most I've tried before. That's why I go so far.

I think if you love driving Bimmers, you won't be happy with an Audi or a Merc. Sounds like there's no guarantee that their service is any better. I say drive what you like and make the longer drive for good service. It will save you time in the long run. Keep in mind, and I'll bet you know this already, the first year of a new model is not going to be the most trouble free experience. I'd probably wait a year for BMW to get the bugs out of the new M3, especially if you're having such issues with service on your current cars that have been out for a while. If they cannot fix them, how are they gonna fix a totally new and technically more complex vehicle?

I haven't ever seen a commercial for BMW that talks about world class service. We all know why.

Can't wait for the post from Vatkens... "I'm with BMWNA and I want to help..." Truth is, they cannot help. They'll only frustrate you more.
