Okay, so I'm 3 weeks in with my Z4 3.0 and here are some general observations.
So far, I'm loving it. This is a car that's very easy to live with day in and day out. It's very comfortable, relatively quiet (for a convertible) and fast as hell.
This particular Z4 has the extended leather option - along with the poplar wood trim, it's probably the nicest of all current BMW interiors.
I love the driving position, the small wheel (with the little thumb grips at 10 and 2) fit my hands perfectly. I love the instrument panel, small though the dials are. The climate control ergonomics are vastly improved over the push-button arrangement in my old E46.
The cozy interior of a two-seater warms up quickly, a major boon here when it's 7 degrees. The heated seats are nice, too.
I like the engine note, aided by an acoustic filter, it's intoxicating.
What can you say about the excellent 3 liter engine that hasn't been said before?
I shod the car with four Blizzak LM25 snows on (downsized) 17 inch ASA rims. I went non -run flat to see what the difference would be. The ride is better, the steering less busy and the vibration level reduced considerably. I'll have to think seriously about ditching the standard 18 inch runflats in the spring - it's money I'd like to not spend, but the difference is too great.
Z4's are solid, too. Torsional rigidity is reportedly near 3 series sedan levels, though let's be honest, my old E46 was a champ wrt structure, feeling as tight and solid the day it departed as when it arrived.
I haven't driven it very hard very often yet, but there's a sweeper up here on the interstate where it cornered flat and sure - not surprisingly (since it shares a lot of E46 parts), there was that familiar E46 balance. This car is a demon for straight line high speed stability - VERY planted
Again, what's most impressive to me, is how easy the car is to live with as a daily driver - if I'm having this much fun now, in winter, I can't wait to wring it out this summer, sans roof!!!
