 RX-7 vs. M Coupe....Not what you think

So I currently have a 1994 RX-7 as my weekend car, and a Toyota Tundra as my daily driver. I want something smaller, faster, and more nimble than the Tundra, and am seriously considering an S54 M coupe. The car I had before the Tundra was a 1998 Lexus SC 400...such a wonderful car, but it had been wrecked before I bought it, and I ended up returning from whence it came. It was pretty much the perfect daily driver for me, except I want something with a manual transmission, and with a bit more feedback....but I liked the relative roominess of the SC, the luxury, and refinement. The RX-7 makes a bad daily driver 'cause I have to fold myself up to put it on...errr....get in it, and it just doesn't have enough room once I'm in there...plus its more harsh and noisy than I'd like on a daily basis. I drove an '02 M3, and it pretty much had the major attributes I was looking for, but it lacked the refinement that a $55k car should have....so I'm looking at an M Coupe because its unique, still has the big S54, and has a much better price tag....plus my Pit Bull will enjoy the hatch.

If its just you and the pit, the could should suffice as a more than capable daily driver. What are the demands of your daily driver? Although the M coupe is a hatch, there is not a whole lot of room back there...

Texas is a great place to get a decent priced M coupe. An S54 is going to be tough to find, but not impossible. Best of luck!

Check out www.texastoys.com from time to time...I have seen several S54 coupes for sale on that site from time to time.

I dunno if I'm getting one or not...that's why I was asking ya'll for some advice.

I want something quiet, and comfortable, with more room than the RX-7, and almost as much speed and handling..........like I said, the Lexus was perfect except it didn't have a manual trans, and I wanted to feel a bit more connected to the road. The '02 M3 I drove seemed to be what I wanted, except I can't justify the price considering the lack of overall refinement. So, let me redirect the discussion, how does an S54 MC compare to an M3? More noise? Harsher ride? Tiny cockpit?

Yes...I've seen a few there at TexasToys....although I don't like the guy that "owns" it. I talked to him back when he had RX-7s all over the place when I was looking for mine....he just gives me the creeps. I have a local dealer looking for me...but he's not the high-powered travel all over the country attend all the auctions type of dealer.

Based on your comments about quiet environment and your appreciation for the luxury and refinement of the SC400, I'll guess that you won't like the coupe for daily use.

Most coupe owners I know are exceedingly friendly and helpful whenever anyone inquires about the cars. If you could drive or ride in one for 20 minutes, including some highway time and a few ripped up roads in your area, you'd be able to answer your own question.

For what it's worth, my limited experience with the RX7 boils down to this:
- The coupe is slightly larger in the cockpit area and has much more storage.
- The coupe is slightly stiffer, but that could've been due to sacked shocks on the RX7.
- The coupe's brakes offer far, far better feedback.

It sounds to me like a basic M3 would be a good choice for you. Perhaps a CPO M3 addresses your price concerns and would still be a blast to drive. Personally I like the idea of the M3 with the cloth-insert-equipped manual seats, no sunroof, no luxury accessories and the five speed.

Good luck with your choices.

Mike
