Normally, I would stay away from first model year cars. What do y'all think about this one? Can we assume the basic platform will be the same as now, the engine choices are proven, and one could expect less problems than the usual first year?

I'd say that's a safe assumption. Much like the Z3 M Coupe, which hardly changed at all until 2001.

I'd agree, pretty safe assumption.

I suppose there could be a leak or squeak and rattle from around the hatchback, but outside of that, it's a tried and true Z4.

I have the 33rd or 34th M Coupe (build date 7/98) and it's a little rattly, but otherwise, I can't break it.
The rattles are mostly me, leftover from tearing the rear apart for RSM install and the glovebox, which I guess I should take 10 minutes and fix.
Everything works fine, save for a blown light bulb behind one of the AC controls.
