Whining noise coming from the front of the car?

I was driving out to get lunch today and on the drive back home, I noticed faint "whining" noises. It sounded like a single bird caw or something I know, it's weird. But I noticed it only made the sound when i wound up the car in gear to 3000 RPM, then depressed the clutch to up shift. I did this around my neighborhood and the higher RPMs I wind the car to, the louder the noise is. It sounds a bit like the type of squeaky sound the hood struts make when you lift the hood up.

Has anyone experienced this before?

EDIT: Okay, I tried recreating the sound and I found that if I put the car in neutral, hold the RPM's at 2500 or so, and depress the clutch and hold it there, it'll make the same whining sound. The higher the revs, the louder the whine. But this is only if the clutch pedal is depressed...

WTF? Is it my clutch? Flywheel? Did I run over a bird?

Drive belt or pulleys?

I had something similar I classify as the hidden squeek catagory.

Happened once and I traced it to the fan on the AC. I turned off the compressor and it still was there. Turned off the fan and it went away. Sounded like a locust or some insect that had gotten in the vents somewhere. I took a leaf blower and blew into the vent, haven't heard it in a few months.

It will drive you nuts though.

The other squeek I had was a pully on the fan itself.

I would suspect a trhowout bearing going out.
CLUE: It only makes the noise when the clutch is disengaged.

Yeah, thats what some others have told me too. Thanks Bob.

I'm hard-pressed for cash, so I dont know how long it'll be before I can get it fixed. Do you think it's severe enough that I shouldnt drive it? Or should I just take a hit and get it repaired ASAP? I don't want to tempt fate, but it's just a bad time to have something break on the car...

I would say that you're still OK to drive it (just have to baby it) until you come up with the cash to fix it.

How many miles on the car?
