Markd89, How did your transmission drain fix work?

I have the same problem with cracked transmission drain on my m roadster. I have used some silicon sealant on the plug and put in in finger tight so as not to enlarge the crack. It is only seeping slightly. Did the JB weld fix the leak on yours? Any helpful hints would be appreciated. I guess the only other option would be tranny swap(unless the rear housing is sold separately)????? Not much of an option at all. Beware of telflon tape. Gives false torque readings!!!!!!!=CRACK......

Here's the info:

I was very careful.. Here's what I did, going off memory:

1. Empty all fluid. (doh!)
2. Left car lifted a bit for a day or two to drain out "all" remaining oil. "all" is in quotes because you'll never get it all.
3. Obtained a non-tapered drain bolt. The original bolt seals by tapered fit. The more you tighten the more it pushes against the threads outward. (Until like my PO, you crack the casing). The non tapered bolt is going to seal by pulling up, pressing the bolt against the bottom of the trans.
4. Get some brake cleaner. Brake cleaner degreases, it also leave no residue (like carb cleaner).
5. I sprayed up in the trans, again allowed to drain out. Did this repeatedly.
6. I sprayed some more, and used a paper towel to dry. I also put my finger up in the hole (!) to get any oil that would drip down. It's all about keeping stuff oil free until it has glue and metal on it.
7. Quickly I applied JB Weld and inserted the bolt and tightened down. Let sit with heat lamp on it for a day.
8. Smother in silicone sealant, over and around the bolt. Again let sit to dry. Basically there was no bolt showing after. Not pretty, but functional.
9. Fill with Redline MTL.

If you need to change the trans oil again - get an electric pump and pump it out of the fill hole.

I know there's alot of steps above and purists would not be happy, but its held up fine. 1 yr+ and zero leaks. The main point is to get everything super clean, grease free and dry and then not be in a hurry to get it all done in one day.

Good luck!

I'm gonna give it a shot. Where did you get your non-tapered drain bolt? Any particular recommendations on a new drain bolt as far as size? Thanks for your help!!!

I don't remember where I bought it, probably Kragen or something... but you do want to make sure the size is correct and the threads are the right pitch. I'd suggest taking the existing plug, measuring it with a micrometer and bringing it when you get your new one..

Good luck!

Parts data shows it as M24x1.5.

I didn't know that our tansmission has a magnet in it.

I have narrow fingers. On mine you can feel the metal stuck to it. No magnetic drain plug though? Maybe since I'll be using a different plug anyway I can find one that is magnetic. I always like those.
