Given major changes aside, (eg S50 v S52), and reduced power of S54 due to catalytic converter placement. Can anyone tell me why trivial changes are made between the two? Eg US cars have "Check Engine" light whereas euro simply have a picture of an engine. Similarly US have "unleaded gasoline" written but euro dont. US have non adjustable headlights euro have adjustable. And US have those bulky numberplate lights whereas euro have a slimline light on the bumper to illuminate the plate.
Does anyone know why these trivial changes were/are necessary??

Most Europeans don't speak English as their first language. Americans don't react well to icons and want everything spelled out (or they'll sue when they ignore the icon).

I Bleieve these are due to differing US and European laws.

Disclaimer -- I am an attorney. No offense Randy but it was no lawyers who made unleaded gas the rule of the day or requested the differences you cited. It was legislators and bureaucrats who felt as though they know how cars should be built or developed.

The changes were introduced to protect the US market aka economy from cheaper imports. Its a way to keep production within US at a needed level to maintain economy stable. Example in europe non m z3 with decent miles can be purchased for around 5-6k...when here its around 13-14k. Would be a great business opportunity but then you have to make the conversions required...which is not cheap at all and can easily run you over 5ks.
