Is it okay to use a nylon washer in the oil drain plug? The filter came with a copper, but I had already put a nylon ring on before I noticed?
Does anyone have some advice for a first time DIY?

Do you think I should drain the oil to replace the nylon ring with the copper one?

A friend bought an oil filter for his 735iL that came with one of those plastic washers... it leaked. The normal copper (sintered?) washers seem to work much better.

Lance is right, if you're quick about it you can just top off.
On the other hand, buy a Mityvac 7201 anyway. Useful for oil changes, and also for draining oil and then putting it back without even getting dirty. I've done this a couple of times for various projects (last one was the temperature sender in my sump cover).
