How do I release the back seat of a 1990 535i and get to the battery?

You will find small indentations on the botton of the seat about the center of each back seat. Get in the car facing the rear on one side. Grab the botton of the seat and pull up HARD. That side will pop loose. Do the same for the other side and there you have it

I assume you mean grab the rear of the seat. Way too logical. I nearly broke my back trying to pull up on the front. Thanks. More 90 535i questions coming soon.

No you grab the front of the bottom seat cushion

You'll have to get your fingers underneath the front of the seat and give it a good, solid, upwards tug. Jerk it hard. You won't break anything, they just come up hard.
