 That damn diff plug!

Ok, so I am trying to drain the diff. I have a long extention sticking out the back of the car and the car is on the ground... But it just doesnt want to break free. Its starting to frustrate me. I get about 12 inches of twist on the extention and nothing. Literally from 90 degrees vertical on the wrench handle to flat against the ground.

I guess that says something about buying your extentions at harbor freight.

Any suggestions that I dont know about to break these damn plugs loose? I torqued them to spec, so they shouldnt be overtight.

Don't use the extension. I use a 1/2" ratchet with a socket, and sometimes I use a piece of pipe over the ratchet handle. I do it all under the car, not jacket up or on ramps.

On the other hand, I am much larger than you.

Watch the torque when you re-install the plugs. "Suggested" torque is about 35 nm..much less than the approx. 65-70nm in the manual. (going from memory right now) This will prevent the nasty cracking of the aluminum cover which has happended to a few of us

edit-ski:...oops newton meters...told you I was going from year old memory

Once you get it/them loose, only tighten them back to 45Nm.

BTW, you'd better be certain the fill plug will come off before you worry about the drain plug...

Yup Yup and Yup.

I think they are torqued to 45nm. Right out of the bentley manual. I did that with the certified craftsman digi-torque so I know thats accurate.

Ok, so if your car is slightly lowered, you can still get in there and break it free? That the next step I guess. I just thought I could get this job done without getting dirty. Oh well.

I use a breaker bar and socket like Jon does. Also do it without having the car up on ramps or stands. Don't dent the muffler when it lets go.
I'm told that the E90 doesn't have a drain plug.
