Does anyone know if the driver's side air vent (the actual one that rotates up/down/side to side) if this is easily removable?
Does it snap in place or does the whole dash have to removed to get it out.
One of the fins is loose and rattles, just wanna see if i can snap it back into place. THX in advance!

This picture from Ron Stygar's website might help.

Remove the headlight switch knob and a small screw that is either behind the airvent fins or behind the knob and you should be able to remove the vent.

Also, you say "should be able to remove the vent," can anyone confirm this? If the switch needs to be removed to remove the vent, i will buy the special tool. Thanks!

It's been a while, but I removed the knob on my 97 Z3 to replace it with a chrome one and removed the small screw and then the vent to replace the light bulb in the housing. I did not remove the switch so the vent would not come out from the dash very far. I had the lower dash panel off anyway so I wound up replacing the bulb from behind by feel. I have read that you can remove the light switch using two small screwdrivers and prying the clips on the switch outwards, but it would be easier with the tool.

One of the fins is loose and rattles, just wanna see if i can snap it back into place. THX in advance! | I have a brand new vent assembly in my hand. You have to remove the switch and the screw above the switch shaft to remove the vent assembly. Once removed it is not that obvious on how it comes out. It went in so it has to come out. If you remove the link from the open close vent piece, I assume that you could push it out from behind but as mentioned not obvious to me since the cylinder appears larger than the opening. When I add my extended leather dash pods this winter, I'll bust the stock one open when I replace it with the new one and let you know. Really don't want to mar the new one to find out. Easy way is just to purchase a new vent assembly. Part number 64 22 8 397 715 $47.50 retail. $35.63 from Jay Lilley at Nashville BMW 615-850-4022 or any other -25% dealer plus shipping, plus tax if you live in the state that the -25% guy is in.

I think we push the vent out from behind. But I think it's more complicated than that. We might have separated the headlight stwitch form the vent and then pushed out.
