Interesting website: http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/s.../interval.html
According to theory 5, for my car:
BMW High Performance Oil Virgin TBN: 10 Oil Capacity: 6.9 Qts Observed MPG: 22 Engine C.I.: 182.8 SAE Net HP: 215
I need to change oil at 12907 miles. To be conservative, if using 8 for TBN, it's 10325 miles.

Thanks for the link...really interesting stuff. Maybe there is some basis to BMWs 15k (+ or -) oil change interval beyond only having to do three of them during the free maintenance period.

My first Oil Service light came on 12.5K. Based on what the computer is saying on miles to go, the next oil change will come due shortly before 25K miles. My car has less than 19K and has had 2 oil changes paid by BMW, 1 due to time and 1 due to Oil Service monitor saying so.

Problem is, various engines, even different engines of the same make and model "consume" TBN at different rates.
But no matter what, based on oil analysis results, the BMW formula works pretty well.

I think it is the independent mechanics who lose out on the oil change business who complain the most about the new guidelines. I find it almost impossible to believe that BMWNA selling cars with stickers in 30s to 120s, will dicker about an oil change, they pay the dealer $50-60, to do. It does not make any sense. They passed in a 2% increase in MSRP earlier this year and can easily pass through a few hundred more if more service was indeed needed.

That is completely false as all other manufacturers have gone to extended oil change interval recommendations. Lexus recommends changing oil at 10k, 15k, 30k, 45k, etc. and using mineral oil.
