I am interested in activating sport mode in my Coupe, but my understanding is that it will raise the rev-limiter to 8,000rpm's.
I know that a supposed reason for the lack of service action regarding the rod-bearing failure for us S54 Coupe owners was the lower redline. I have read in previous posts that activating sport mode will void the 100k mile warranty on the motor.
As far as I know, the service action included changing the connecting rod bearings and replacing the inefficent oil pump. How much would it cost me to have these preformed on my car? I would much rather pay a little bit now instead of paying for an entire S54 down the road.... Has anyone had this done, out of pocket? I know Phrider got his taken care of due to his Blackstone's, but anyone out of pocket?

The cylinder head has been superceded, for example.
I wouldn't consider doing the conrod and oil pump swap unless you have reason to think you need it, like high lead and copper in oil analysis. It's a good chunk of labor.

Awesome, thank you for the reply and the information. I was obviously getting Sport Mode and things like Conforti's Shark Injector... I guess I shoulda gone to My bad....
I am assuming that raising the rev limiter would void the warranty?

Quote: | I am assuming that raising the rev limiter would void the warranty? | The gist of any warranty claim battle: the manufacturer has to prove that your mod caused the failure. Short-term overrevs (money shifts, etc.) are relatively easy for the manufacturer to point to as a cause to top end failures since there's lots of historical precedent. That's not true of bottom end failures, and I'm not aware of any cases that have gone to court over S54 bottom end failures. Caveat emptor; run a 8100 rpm Shark and blow a hole in your crankcase with a conrod bearing failure, BMW _could_ deny your warranty claim and then it's up to you whether or not it's worth fighting. I'd assume not, since lawyers aren't cheap and time is money. Especially if the car is your daily driver.
I think anyone that loses sleep over warranty concerns shouldn't be thinking about running an 8100 rpm Shark Injector. I'm not one of those people, but if you are, spend your money elsewhere. There are several worthwhile mods to S54 cars that won't kill your 6/100,000 engine warranty.

I'm not one to loose sleep, but I tend to always make sure I take whatever steps I can to make sure I don't do anything stupid. Thanks for all the help!

I was able to get an LA dealer do the bearing switch based on copper and lead levels in a series of oil tests. They did not do the oil pump.
Result: operating temps dropped and lead & copper levels dropped to normal ranges.
Remember, this is covered for 100k miles and 7 years from in-service date.
