 Differential Oil.

Just bought my 2000 MCoupe and was thinking abt changing the oil in my differential. My owner's manual states the 2.3 and 2.8 Z3's have a lifetime fluid. Regarding the M versions, it says "Approved hypoid gear oil (any BMW center can provide information on oil specifications)" EXCEPT MY STEALERSHIP . They seem quite loathe to hand out any info. They also want $42.00 per litre and $150.00 for labour. Can somebody give me the specs i need??

Thks...Jay

I first put in Mobile One synthetic but then noticed a noise from the diff when turning at low speed. My independent BMW mechanic recommended switching to BMW brand fluid called "SAF-XJ + FM Booster" (SAE 75W-140). The box had BMW part number 83 22 2 282 583 printed on it. All I know is that the noise went away after switching out the fluid.

See this thread for my experience in my 1999 M Coupe:

I'm now running the BMW branded fluid that I listed above and haven't had any further issues with the diff noise. I won't be changing it to anything else unless someone tells me a good reason to.

Some people run RedLine diff fluid.

Bob Tunnell, who is a seriuos autocrosser, found that Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube lowered his diff temeprature by 20 degrees.

The BMW Castrol XJ + FM Booster is supposed to be specific to the special diff in E46 M3s for a low speed tight turning grinding noise, that is due to that diff design (only found in E46 M3s). But if it works.

I run Redline or Mobil 1 in the LTW and Roadster. I run the special BMW fluid in the E46 M3.

BTW, IMO, the lifetime fluids are only for the life of the diff, which will be much lower if you do not change the fluid.

I just wanted to add to the thread that Jim Rowe of Metric Mechanic has been using Pennzoil 80w90 in his differentials "with great success".
