"Manual" on an auto Z3: what's the point?

What is the point of the "Manual" button on the automatic Z3s? How do you use it? Are there instructions posted anywhere? I read the owner's manual once, and don't remember reading anything on that subject.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I have that "steptronic" feature on my Z3. I've only had the car for just over a month, and I haven't used it aside from just experimenting with it. My wife likes a manual transmission, but I've never learned how to drive a stick (please, no flames!!!). I figured this was a nice compromise.

If you shift the knob from "D" over to the left, you will be in sport mode. This mode allows the engine to rev higher before shifting to the next gear. From sport mode you can bump the knob forward to shift up, and backward to shift down, to simulate a manual, or let the computer shift for you by leaving the knob alone. There is no clutch.

His Z uses a previous generation of automatic. If it has the "Manual" button, I believe it is actually two generations prior to the steptronic.

My wife's Mom has a 328i with a manual button. I asked the sales staff how it was used when we bought the car for her, but I'm having trouble remembering exactly how you were supposed to use it. The shred of memory I have left on it tells me that it was redundant. That.. you could still shift the lever manually through the gears regardless of whether the button was pressed.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
