Buns of Steel - Part 1

Well, Gordon (who posts here as aussiegto) and I decided to fix our butt cracks

We have been following Randy's exploits over the past several months and bought two of his kits, one for Gordon's supercharged '98 M Roadster and one for my '00 M Coupe. Over the past three weekends we've been working on first his roadster, then my coupe to install the kits and reinforce the sway bar mounts.

I plan to do a complete write-up, but for now here are some of the highlights.

Gordon's roadster showed several signs of damage, including a tear starting in the diff mounting ear, popped spotwelds, and cracks in the subfloor seams. These were not all obvious without removal of the seam sealer

He also decided to change out his guibo, which as it turned out was a good idea.

My coupe, being the garage queen that she is, showed no sign of damage yet - so call my fix preventive maintenance.

After a good bit of drilling

cutting

slicing

and welding

we got things put back together again

Have to thank Gordon for doing the more difficult welds and coaching me through the other ones, his son Nathan for helping out, and my husband Jim for invaluable support.

Randy, save me a spot in the special dual-eared parking corral at Homecoming!

Randy's kit is more than sufficient to reinforce this weak area of our car's anatomy. He provides very detailed instructions with his kit and was always available for questions and support, both technical and moral

Looks great! Welcome to the dual-eared corral!

There's even a Coupe running around (Boston) that has a modified stock exhaust system.

So, there may be hope for the ACS Coupe yet
