Why is there a panel above the pedals?

I purchased my '01 MZ3 a couple of weeks ago and have been having a slight problem with my toes getting caught in a plastic panel directly above the foot pedals. Of course with size 12 shoes you'd expect something like this to happen, but believe it or not my feet seem to fit fine in every other car I've driven, even my '97 Miata. Anyway, this morning I removed the panel, and bingo - the problem has been eliminated!

This panel is not visible unless you're crawling under the dash, so it can't be decorative. It's also not functional since nothing was being held in place by the panel. So my question is: what is this panel for besides tangling up feet?

BTW - for anyone with a similar problem, removing the panel is a VERY EASY job, all it takes is a flat bladed screwdriver and about 2 minutes of your time.

I would like to know the answer to this too. My size 11 feet barely nips the thing.

C'mon, you don't need toes do you?

I wear size 15 shoes and have never had a problem

There must be major differences between the area above the foot pedals between our two cars, because there's no way you could drive my car with shoes that size!

I've never had any problems driving JonM's 2001 M Coupe or any customer cars. Angle your foot.
