Very interesting read on another forum about how hard it can be to diagnose new BMWs.

It's a business model. You can't blame BMW for it. There are many other products on the market that is working only with proprietary accessories.
Unfortunately the era when you could adjust the idle just with a screwdriver is history now. It just sucks. | The market *should* fix the problem by discounting out-of-warranty, used BMWs to zero. A car has no value if you can't service it, since it will soon leave you standing by the side of the road, swearing. If that happens, people will stop buying new BMWs. Or, the demand for aftermarket, non-BMW service will rise to the point that the purchase of millions of dollars of proprietary servicing equipment will be viable for an independent outfit.
Mind you, it's already happening; late E38 7ers, cars less than six years old, are now being scrapped in the UK because independents don't have the right gear, and dealers charge £150 an hour. Still, people queue round the block to buy E65s. Unfortunately, it seems the thorn in the side of this economic perfection is that markets are stupid and highly irrational .

The anti-trust laws will, eventually, provide relief. But it will be awhile, in part because of BMW's "humanitarian" program of providing maintenance service for "free." (Not really; it's added to the price of the car and we pay for it.) By doing so BMW squelches the competition for another year or two.

I'm not familiar with the last generation Mercedes and Audi models. Do they come with propriety firmware? Or are they open source, so that everyone can fix the car in the garage?
