Diagnostics
Very interesting read on another forum about how hard it can be to diagnose new BMWs.

| | Reply » Diagnostics | The link in the first post talks about how only BMW's proprietary software can be used to diagnose its cars. That is very scary. But there has to be an anti-trust violation here if BMW does not allow someone to develop software to work on the cars, or license the software itself. What BMW is doing is attempting to capture the entire market on servicing its cars, putting independent shops out of business.
So, I predict that either things will loosen up or BMW will get sued. It may take a few years, as more and more of these complex cars come off warranty, but one or the other will happen.
I hope somebody remembers this thread in 2008 and pulls it back up.

It was about the diagnostic software and what you could do with it (or what you can't) Not much, just read a couple of common data such as the rpm, speed and some useless stuff, that's it.
But think of this way, since car manufacturers started integrating their own head units into the dash or using special faceplates, car audio manufacturers were on their own. Try to put an aftermarket DVD Navigation in an E46. We don't even need to talk about the last generation models (I-Drive).
BMW is running their own IT company (acquired sometime ago) to write their own engine and car software.
I don't know how they can force BMW to make their propriety software available for 3rd party companies. Since there isn't an international accepted standard bus structure, it's very hard to enforce it. (although some manufacturers are working on an open standard, as I posted here)
It's a business model. You can't blame BMW for it. There are many other products on the market that is working only with proprietary accessories.
Unfortunately the era when you could adjust the idle just with a screwdriver is history now. It just sucks.
