Just curious, how long do you think it will be until GM dies, or gets bought off?

A company like GM will never die. It'll just get cut up into little parts and sold off piece by piece. Like the company I work for.

GM is too big to die. As Jon stated they will sell off the unprofitable portions of the business if needed. They make more money as a bank than they do with manufacturing cars.
Maybe they buy a good mid size bank like Wachovia and sell off the car business...
GM has had these same problems before and they are still around...I wouldn't bet on their demise anytime soon.

I just don't understand why GM just can't design great cars. Being in a recent Buick told me they can manufacture cars as well as anyone, but why design a Buick? It is so boring. The way I see it is that GM has nothing to lose; they might as well design great cars even if it costs more, because they're decomposing anyway. I doubt GM management sees it that way though.
More likely what I see happening is a showdown with the UAW. It looks like GM management thinks this is a good time to take them on. Personally, I don't think that's the problem. They've got to design vehicles people want to buy, and they generally don't. Disgusting. Yes, health benefit costs are out of control, but that's like worrying about peeling paint on your house while the walls are collapsing.
I recently test-drove a Chevy Cobalt, thinking it might be good for my daughter. I was impressed. I never figured GM would actually deliver a small car built like that. I was nearly ready to buy, but during our recent trip to France and Belgium we had a Golf diesel /5sp as a rental. Sorry, GM, I'd rather buy the VW, and between higher costs and lower incentives the Golf will be $4K more. The Cobalt is impressive for GM, the Golf is simply impressive.
I used to think GM and Ford just needed a bloody nose to get the message and get back on track. But that was 10 points of market share ago.

I'd bet GM is making more money these days as ditech.com/GMAC Mortgage
